I am Mary Harcourt Daugharty. I was placed in a children’s home at the age of seven. I felt as though the world itself had rejected me, and my parents had thrown me away. This was only the beginning because during the next 12 years of my life I would have ten different sets of house–parents.
My story is not only about the initial pain that is caused by abandonment. It is about the loss of love itself. Abandonment is a cumulative wound containing all of the hurts, rejections, losses and disconnections that cause us to lose our sense of self.
That’s what Therabear is all about. I have designed and created a Teddy bear, named Timothy, in honor of my childhood bear. Timothy helps to share my story with
hurting children who struggle with similar feelings of abandonment and neglect.
I want to share my story with as many children as possible who feel that there is no hope. Timothy will help take an abandoned child on a journey from the wounds of abandonment, to a future filled with hope.
At risk children need all the love and compassion we, as a society, can give them. They also need to know that they are not the only ones who have lived in a children’s home.
It would be my joy to speak at your facility, to both your staff and children, to share with them my story. If the telling of my story could offer them hope then they may see for themselves a brighter future. My motto is "to whom much is given much is required". I was given the ability to tell my story and to share it with hurting children. It is my desire to share with as many children as time, and God, will allow. I look forward to hearing from you and coming to your facility. May God continue to bless all who take care of His children.
